TAIL ROTOR ASSEMBLY INSPECTION
5.51.6. Correction of Tail Rotor Transition Area
a. Correction procedure
(1) If tail rotor blade is cracked, replace per paragraph 5.53
(2) Upon completion of inspection procedures, which require hand sanding of the tail rotor blade surfaces,
restore as follows
(a) Smooth the sanded repair area using 320 grit cloth (item 48, App F) then use 400 grit cloth (item 49,
App F) to finish blending the area.
(b) Solvent wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol (item 25A, App F) or tape (item 205, App F) and allow to
dry for 15 minutes.
(c) Apply corrosion resistant coating (item 66, App F), MIL-C-5541 Class 1A, by brush or swab to any bare
metal. Allow coating to remain on surface until color develops. Color need not be uniform in appear-
ance. If the metal is stainless, the conversion coating will not change color and will not adversely affect
the metal.
(d) Rinse with water and blot to remove excess (do not rub new coating).
(e) Allow to air dry for 1 to 2 hours.
NOTE
Primer must be applied within 1 to 2 hours after applying chemical conversion coating in step b.2.(c).
(f) Apply epoxy primer coating kit (item 76A, App F) (MIL-P-85582 TYPE I Class C2) or (MIL -P-23377
TYPE I Class C) to sanded area. Allow primer to dry for 1 to 2 hours prior to top coating or handling of
part.
(g) Apply polyurethane coating (item 140, App F), (MIL-C-46168, TYPE IV) or (MIL-C-53039). Allow to dry
for 1 to 2 hours before handling.
NOTE
Newly painted surface will dry to touch in one hour and will dry hard in approximately three hours.
