INSPECT THE NEEDLE BEARING AREA.
a. Using a flashlight, visually inspect the needle bearing area.
b. Remove the spiral retaining ring from inside of the clutch output drive
shaft.
c. Remove the aluminum plug.
d. Inspect the inside of the bearing cavity for burnt, dry or blackened grease.
None Allowed.
e. Inspect for the presence of metal particles or other contamination in the
needle bearing cavity. None Allowed.
f. Inspect for damage to visible portion of the needle bearing and shaft.
None Allowed.
g. Rotate the output drive on the clutch while observing the needle bearing. If
the shaft does not rotate smoothly or the shaft/needle bearing does not
remain centered, replace the clutch.
h. Check spline teeth on both the tail rotor fork and drive shaft for sealant.
Remove sealant if present. Do not reapply sealant.Inspect for signs of
overheating. None Allowed.
CAUTION
Contamination of the bearings or failure to follow the prescribed pro-
cedures may cause premature failure of the needle bearings.
i. Verify bearing cavity is properly packed with grease (MIL-G-81322). Grease
should be packed approximately one half cubic inch (1cc) around inside
diameter.
j. Install plug into the clutch output drive shaft.
k. Install the spiral lock ring. Ensure that it has a good positive engagement.
l. Install anti-flail bracket (para. 6.16). Check circumferential clearance.
