CHAFF
counter
Displays the number of chaff cartridges remaining in the payload module.
CHAFF
counter
knob
Adjusts counter to correspond to number of chaff cartridges loaded in payload module.
ARM light
Indicates that the ARM/SAFE switch is at ARM, safety flag pin is removed, and
payload module is armed.
ARM/SAFE
switch
ARM
Applies electrical power through safety flag switch to cyclic WAS for firing.
SAFE
Removes power from dispenser subsystem.
MODE
selector
Selects type of chaff release.
MAN
Dispenses one chaff cartridge each time the WAS chaff fire position is toggled.
PGRM
Allows setting electronic module controls before flight to automatically dispense chaff
according to predetermined number of chaff cartridges per burst and number of
salvos.
4.36.1 Dispenser Assembly.
The dispenser assembly
(fig 4-20) contains the C-F (chaff-flare) selector switch,
chaff counter control, and a housing containing the se-
quencer assembly. The sequencer assembly receives 28
vdc through the WAS and furnishes pulses to each of the
30 contacts of the breech assembly, in sequential order 1
through 30, thus firing each of the chaff cartridges.
4.36.2 Remote Safety Switch.
The remote safety
switch is located on the tailboom just forward of the dis-
penser assembly. This switch safes the dispenser by
grounding the chaff dispenser contacts and opening the
firing circuit when the safety pin is installed in the switch.
4.36.3 Payload Module Assembly.
The payload mod-
ule assembly (fig 4-20) consists of the payload module
and the retaining plate. The payload module has 30
chambers which will accept chaff. The chaff cartridges are
loaded, one per chamber, and are held in place by the re-
taining plate. The payload module assembly is loaded into
the dispenser assembly.
4.36.4 Electronic Module.
The electronic module (fig
4-20) provides signals to fire the chaff and to change the
chaff counter accordingly. It contains a programmer and a
cable assembly which includes a 28 volt supply recep-
tacle. The programmer consists of a programming circuit
which allows the setting of chaff burst quantity, burst inter-
val, salvo quantity, and salvo interval. The safety switch
on the electronic module is not used. The electronic mod-
ule is located in the right aft avionics bay.
4.36.5 Electronic Module Controls.
The switches on
the electronic module (fig 4-20) are used to program the
chaff dispenser for predetermined release of chaff car-
tridges. The function of each switch is described in table
4-22.
